Made from Scratch
In Korean culture, ‘의식주’ (Euishikju), representing ‘Food, Clothing, and Shelter,’ is essential to life. The emphasis on ‘Food’ in Korea transcends mere sustenance, becoming a profound aspect of cultural and social life. Adapting to New York involved sharing food with friends, yet the longing for a specific home-cooked meal persisted. This sentiment inspired ‘Made from Scratch’—an interview and memoir-based
cookbook that intentionally avoids the perfectly refined style of traditional cook- books. Instead, it curates authentic stories and personalized recipes with the pri- mary goal of evoking nostalgia and rekindling emotions tied to cherished dishes.
Comprising eight interviews, each chapter starts with a conversation before transitioning into a personalized version of the featured recipe. Capturing the distinctive tone and language of each participant adds a personal touch to the narrative. This book serves as a unique exploration into what people create in the kitchen when experiencing homesickness or nostalgia, creating a deeper connection to the essence of home and food memories.
